Ideas for Free Web Promotion

Promoting Your Website, Blog, or Lens

In this lens, I'm going to show you all of the ways that you can advertise for free online. This list could really be endless since promotion has a lot to do with creativity. So please feel free to contact me if you have any tips to add!

I've included some specific ways to promote blogs and Squidoo lenses, but the rest can be used to promote just about anything.

While there are a lot of great ways to advertise online, there are also some ways that can backfire on you. That's why I've also included a list of promotion methods to avoid. They can hurt you in many forms, such as having your links removed from websites, having your site banned from search engines, and hurting your overall online reputation.

Remember, this lens is not meant to walk you through the promotion process. It is just meant as a starting point for doing extra research or as a way to get new ideas if you are stuck. Also, promotion is a continuous process. In order to be successful, you have to develop your strategies over time (not just all at once.)

Other Tips

Go Beyond Your Niche

If you have a site about recipes, don't just look for links from cooking sites. Look into sites about home improvement, parenting, women, nutrition, health, etc. These places all have a great chance of getting visitors who are interested in recipes.

Check On Your Competition

Especially if they've been established for a while, it's a good idea to use a backlink checking tool to see where they have gotten links from.

Do Your Research

Read through forums, blogs, newsletters, and other resources on the subject. Also, consider buying a book or two as they are generally more in-depth and higher quality than free sources. Plus, they are great to have on hand for future reference!

Content is Everything

You can promote all you want, but if you don't have quality content on your site, it won't make up for it. Traffic by itself will not help you, you want traffic that sticks around and, hopefully, comes back. Plus, quality content makes other sites more likely to link to you on their own.

What NOT To Do

Link Farms

Autosurf Programs

Traffic Exchanges

Any type of cheating or blackhat SEO tricks (ie: hidden text)

Linking to bad neighborhoods

Excessive or irrelevant link exchanges

Using the same anchor text in all backlinks

Submitting EVERY post to social bookmarking sites

Paying for links

Using auto-submission services for search engines

Building too many links at once

Any feedback is very much appreciated! (But spam is not and will be deleted.)

Cool idea; maybe give some tips on what to look for when promoting your lens on another website. Like, are you going to get the kind of traffic you want if you post your lens on this website? And what are some really good specific websites I can use to promote my lens?

It's nice to see someone write an article that is balanced. Social networking can be very effective if the context is well chosen.

Content really is everything.

Hi! Go Beyond Your Niche is a great idea which can expend you scope.

This is great technique. First you narrow the scope with a niche and second you go beyond your niche if the niche is profitable. I like it!

This is a useful lens, make me think a lot.
